Why do we need Anti Blue Light Glasses?

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is all around you as well as other colored visible light. The sun is glowing blue. The same goes for fluorescent and incandescent lamps. Humans are exposed to more blue light than ever before because devices that rely on light-emitting diode (LED) technology are becoming more popular. Your computer screens, laptop, iPad, TVs, mobile phones, and tablets all use LED technology, which carries large amounts of blue light.

*Disclaimer: Harmful blue-violet light is between 415-455nm.

How does blue light affect our eyes?

Digital equipment can cause eye strain if used nearby or for long periods. Research has shown that people tend to blink their eyes less than usual when using computers, laptops, and other digital devices. If your eyes blink too much, you may lose water and cause a lot of eye fatigue. Digital Eye fatigue has different meanings from person to person. If you are tired of your eyes staring at the blue light-emitting screen, you may experience the following symptoms.

  • Dry eye
  • Eye sickness or tingling
  • Eyestrain
  • Headache
  • Facial muscle fatigue due to side eye

How to prevent your eyes from damage caused by blue light?

While high-quality blue light blocking glasses can reduce the exposure of your eyes here are a few more ways by which you can limit your exposure to the harmful rays emitted by digital devices.

  • Practice the 20-20-20 rule

When you are using your phone or computer screen, take a break after every 20 minutes and look at an object placed 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

  • Use eye drops to keep your eyes moist.

Eye drops like artificial tears and an indoor humidifier is good ways to prevent your eyes from becoming too dry and irritated while using the blue light-emitting device.

  • Use eyeglasses based on the proper prescription.

Long-term squinting of the screen is not recommended for overall eye health. If you wear eyeglasses for vision correction, make sure you are wearing prescription eyeglasses for the distance between your eyes and the screen (ideally arm length). Most of the glass is contained for long-distance use.

  • Adjusts the blue light of the screen

It is recommended to set the screen to a warm tone “overnight” setting to reduce the risk of eye strain and sleep disturbance. You can purchase a blue light filtering screen to bypass your computer's screen while you work at night. Filters can block glare on the screen. Also, source shows that it blocks 30-60% of blue light, but it's unclear whether it can block blue light and help maintain the sleep-wake cycle in people who use backlit screens before bedtime.
